A convenient narrative has taken hold in recent months: India’s struggle to attract and retain foreign capital is largely the result of the Iran war and the ensuing spike in crude oil prices. The conflict, which disrupted the Strait of Hormuz from late February 2026 onward, did impose real costs—higher energy import bills, pressure on the balance of payments, rupee weakness, and heightened investor caution. The Reserve Bank of India responded with stabilisation measures. Yet this explanation is incomplete and, in key respects, misleading. The data show that the decline in net foreign direct investment as a share of GDP began years earlier, long before the latest Middle East shock. The war merely exposed vulnerabilities that successive policy choices had allowed to deepen.

The Numbers Do Not Lie

World Bank data on net FDI inflows as a percentage of GDP paint a clear picture. India’s ratio stood at 2.4% in 2020. It fell to 1.4% in 2021, recovered modestly to 1.5% in 2022, then dropped to 0.8% in 2023 and 0.7% in 2024. By the mid-2020s the figure had settled below 1%.

Compare this with peer emerging economies over the same period. Brazil recorded around 3.4% in 2024, Mexico approximately 2.5%, Indonesia 1.7%, Malaysia 3.7%, and Vietnam roughly 4%. These countries faced the same global headwinds tightening monetary policy in advanced economies, geopolitical fragmentation, and the shift of manufacturing away from China and yet maintained stronger relative inflows.

Absolute figures from the Reserve Bank of India reinforce the trend. Net FDI (gross inflows minus repatriation/disinvestment by foreign firms and outward investment by Indian companies) collapsed from $44 billion in 2020-21 to $10.1 billion in 2023-24 and just $353 million in 2024-25 - a drop of more than 96%. Monthly data in subsequent periods frequently turned negative as repatriation and outward FDI by Indian firms exceeded fresh inflows. Gross FDI has remained relatively robust, but the net number that actually adds to domestic capital formation has withered.

Foreign portfolio investment has followed a parallel path of disappointment. While many emerging markets continued to attract positive portfolio flows, India recorded significant net outflows in recent years, driven by valuation concerns, currency risk, and policy uncertainty.

The Iran war did push the overall balance of payments into more difficult territory. Higher oil prices widened the current account gap and forced defensive action by the central bank. But the capital-account weakness that made India especially vulnerable had already been building for half a decade.

A Policy Failure of Omission

Net FDI measures what remains after foreign investors take profits home and Indian firms deploy capital abroad. The sharp rise in both repatriation and outward FDI is not simply a sign of “maturing” investments or successful Indian multinationals. It also reflects limited opportunities or incentives for reinvestment inside India, and a search for better risk-adjusted returns elsewhere.

Several structural shortcomings stand out:

Regulatory and implementation friction - Despite repeated claims of improved ease of doing business, investors still confront layered approvals, state-level inconsistencies, and slow dispute resolution. Peers such as Vietnam have used fast-track procedures, special investment regimes, and industrial parks with clearer timelines and single-window mechanisms to reduce these frictions.

Incomplete factor-market reforms - Labour and land reforms have moved slowly and unevenly. Manufacturing competitiveness, the segment most capable of generating durable FDI and employment has lagged. Vietnam, Malaysia and parts of Indonesia moved earlier and more decisively on industrial-zone infrastructure, logistics, and targeted incentives for electronics and export-oriented production.

Policy predictability and investor protection - Retrospective changes, complex tax litigation, and the long-pending modernisation of bilateral investment treaties have raised the perceived risk premium. Indonesia’s post-2014 overhaul of its investment treaty framework, for example, prioritised clearer rules and attracted renewed interest. India has talked about updating its model BIT for years; delivery has lagged.

Over-reliance on services and selective incentives - Production-linked incentive schemes have drawn capital into certain sectors, yet the broader manufacturing base and domestic demand conditions have not generated the sustained private investment cycle needed to retain and expand foreign capital. High repatriation rates suggest many investors treat India more as a market for eventual exit than as a long-term production platform.

These problems predate the Iran war. The 2020–2024 decline occurred while India posted relatively strong headline GDP growth. Growth without commensurate capital formation and employment intensity is a hollow achievement.

Lessons from Peers and the Path Forward

Other governments did not wait for a geopolitical shock to act. Vietnam combined extensive free-trade agreements with industrial parks, streamlined licensing for priority projects, and consistent political signalling. Malaysia has used economic corridors and high-tech incentives to position itself in semiconductors and advanced manufacturing. Indonesia pursued downstream processing requirements alongside broader liberalisation to lock in resource-related FDI. Brazil and Mexico leveraged regional trade architecture and relatively more predictable investment climates in key sectors.

India does not need to copy any single model, but it does need urgency on the basics: enforceable timelines for clearances, deeper labour-market flexibility paired with social protection, accelerated infrastructure that actually lowers logistics costs, a credible and stable tax and regulatory environment, and genuine reform of investment treaties that gives long-term capital stronger protections. Selective PLI-style incentives work better when the underlying business environment does not constantly raise the cost of doing business.

The Iran war was a stress test. India passed it in the narrow sense that growth did not collapse and the central bank prevented disorderly currency moves. It failed the deeper test of resilience. Capital flows that should have cushioned the economy were already weak. Blaming external events for a trend that began in 2020 is politically convenient. It is not analytically honest.

Sustainable investment attraction is not a public-relations exercise. It requires the hard, unglamorous work of reducing uncertainty and raising the expected return on capital deployed inside the country. Until that work is done at scale, net FDI will remain a weak link and the next external shock will again find India more exposed than its peers.

In the heart of Rampur, Uttar Pradesh, a university named after a freedom fighter is staring down the barrel of the bulldozer. Mohammad Ali Jauhar University — established in the mid-2000s and named after Maulana Mohammad Ali Jauhar, the Khilafat leader, Congress president and co-founder of Jamia Millia Islamia — faces an order to demolish 38 of its 40 buildings. The Rampur Development Authority issued the notice on 15 July 2026, giving the institution a short window to raze structures that house faculties, hostels, a library, an auditorium and more or watch the state do it and recover the cost.

Only the medical college block and one academic building have been deemed acceptable. The rest, spread across tens of thousands of square metres, are labelled unauthorised for lacking approved building plans under the Uttar Pradesh Urban Planning and Development Act. The university’s defence is straightforward: the campus in Singankhera village fell outside the RDA’s jurisdiction until September 2024. Construction happened earlier under Zila Panchayat oversight. Approvals were obtained where required at the time. Yet the authority has rejected this, insisting the management knew the rules because it secured permissions for two buildings and ignored them for the rest.

The timing is telling. The university was founded under the Mulayam Singh Yadav government (2003–2007) and continued operating through Mayawati’s full term (2007–2012). If the violations were as flagrant as now claimed, the entire state machinery had years to act. It did not. Serious, multi-agency pressure intensified only years later under the Yogi Adityanath administration, long after Azam Khan — the Samajwadi Party leader who drove the project and remains its chancellor — had become a high-profile political target. Nearly a hundred cases have been filed against him and associates since 2017, many linked to the university. In 2019 alone, a cluster of FIRs over alleged land issues appeared in quick succession more than a decade after the events they describe.

In June–July 2026 the coordination became impossible to ignore. Income Tax issued show-cause notices and cancelled the trust’s registration. The Fire Department, Public Works Department, and Jal Nigam followed with their own demands and boards. Then the RDA delivered the demolition order. Agencies that had remained silent for the better part of two decades suddenly discovered urgency in the same narrow window. Critics call this selective enforcement dressed up as the rule of law. Supporters of the government insist it is simply enforcing planning regulations that were ignored. The optics, however, are of an institution being squeezed from every direction at once.

The human cost is not abstract. Roughly 3,000 students study here. Many come from families for whom this campus offered accessible higher education in engineering, law, pharmacy, agriculture, and other fields. Nearly half are women. A significant number are Hindu. Protests erupted outside the gates. Students sat in the heat demanding the order be withdrawn, arguing that demolition would not merely punish a politician but erase years of education and leave them without a clear alternative. Some have said openly that the idea of renaming it “Jai Shri Ram University” or “Jai Gau Mata University,” install one of the self-appointed cow-protection goons roaming the streets as Vice-Chancellor and watch every pending notice, every map objection and every demolition threat evaporate in minutes. Bail orders would clear. Trust registration would be restored. The same buildings that are suddenly “illegal” after nearly two decades would become perfectly regularised. The message is clear — the problem is not the construction itself, but whose name the institution carries and whose politics it is associated with.

Land controversies have shadowed the project for years. Courts have examined claims of excess acquisition beyond the usual ceiling, alleged encroachment, and violations of conditions attached to earlier permissions. Portions of land have already been reclaimed. Those disputes remain live in various forums. Yet the current demolition order rests primarily on building-plan approvals, not a fresh adjudication of the entire land title. Turning an established university into rubble over map formalities, after the institution has functioned for nearly two decades, produced graduates and received recognition, raises a basic question of proportionality. Regularisation exists as a policy tool in many Indian states for constructions that have long been in place. Here the official position has been that agricultural land cannot be regularised and demolition is the only path left.

An interim stay by the Moradabad Divisional Commissioner has paused the bulldozers for now. The legal process continues. That pause is welcome, but it does not erase the message sent by the original order and the simultaneous barrage of notices. Education is not a partisan privilege. Institutions that serve thousands of students, including those from minority and disadvantaged backgrounds, should not be treated as disposable political trophies. When the response to longstanding regulatory questions is a sudden, multi-departmental campaign culminating in an order to demolish almost an entire campus, it looks less like neutral administration and more like the settling of scores.

The Yogi government has made “bulldozer justice” a signature style. Applied to illegal encroachments it can claim popular support. Applied to a functioning university named after a freedom fighter, with thousands of students whose futures hang in the balance, it reveals a different priority: power over pedagogy, symbolism over substance. If the goal is genuinely the rule of law, the state has courts, regularisation mechanisms, and time. Choosing the bulldozer instead tells its own story.

On 25 July 2026, Dharmendra Pradhan resigned as Union Education Minister and announced it himself on X. I want to be clear about why this matters, because the government and its supporters are already busy rewriting it. For me, it is HISTORIC. Never before has a minister resigned specifically over paper leaks in this manner, and never before has a BJP minister been forced out like this. For years we were told this simply does not happen. Rajnath Singh, the defence minister, once claimed that under the NDA government, resignations do not happen the way they did under the UPA government. That confidence has now been proven wrong, and so has every voice that told the youth of this country that nothing ever changes, that resistance is pointless. Those were not neutral observations. They were a narrative, and the narrative just broke.

So let me say the thing the BJP does not want said: this resignation was not an act of accountability. It was extracted. The people of India reached in and took it.

It started as a joke about cockroaches

The movement that became the Cockroach Janta Party did not begin as a movement at all. It began as satire — a bitter response to a sitting Supreme Court judge who compared unemployed young people to cockroaches. That single, contemptuous image told an entire generation exactly what those in power think of them, and instead of flinching, they wore it. “I am a cockroach.” Memes first, then placards, then a sit-in at Jantar Mantar from 6 June.

For the first few weeks it did not catch. The demand that Pradhan resign over the NEET-UG 2026 paper leak was real, but it stayed abstract for a lot of people. The student organisations were there from early on, AISA, AISF, SFI, doing the unglamorous backend work that never makes it onto anyone’s feed. And the government did what it always does with a protest: nothing. It waited. The plan, as far as anyone could tell, was to let the thing die of exhaustion the way so many protests before it were allowed to die. There was even talk of a cabinet reshuffle, moving Pradhan quietly, then calling it accountability after the fact.

Pradhan himself set the tone. In a television interview on 23 June he dismissed the CJP as the “B team of disruptive element,” claiming the movement was a front for people “rejected in the democracy” who had “come in disguise” and wanted to divide the country language several outlets reported as branding peaceful student protesters a B team of terrorists. That is the kind of thing a minister says only when he is completely certain the crowd can do nothing to him.

Then Sonam Wangchuk sat down and stopped eating.

The fast that would not be ignored

Wangchuk began his hunger strike on 28 June. For a while the government kept waiting. But a hunger strike has its own clock, and around the two-week mark people started to pay attention. They started drawing the obvious comparison to Anna Hazare, the same country where in an earlier era the government at least came to the table by day eleven. This time the government did not reach out once. Not for dialogue, not for anything.

By the time the fast crossed two weeks, the cause had quietly changed shape. It was no longer only about one minister’s job. It was about a good man, and the students fasting alongside him, and the plain fact that they might actually be allowed to suffer serious harm rather than be given a single conversation. Instagram, more than any other platform, is where this turned — reel by reel, video by video, until Wangchuk’s deteriorating health was everywhere and the protest site started to fill.

And then the government began making mistakes, and the mistakes compounded.

Mistake one: taking Wangchuk away

On 18 July, twenty days into his fast, police removed Wangchuk from Jantar Mantar and took him to Safdarjung Hospital, calling it medical care ordered on doctors’ advice. The CJP called it what it looked like: a forced abduction, done without his consent or his family’s. His wife, Gitanjali Angmo, called it illegal detention and said the hospital would not discharge him or let the family move him. The Delhi High Court declined to release him. CJP’s Abhijeet Dipke announced he would begin an indefinite fast in response.

Whatever the legal justification, politically it was a catastrophe for the government. Dragging a frail 59-year-old Gandhian off a protest site did not calm anything. It transformed the argument. This was no longer about a paper leak. It was about whether this is a democracy or something else. More people came. More creators came. The cause had bent from “resign, Dharmendra Pradhan” into “this country does not belong to one man to do with as he pleases.” Democracy vs Dictatorship. Democracy vs Arrogance of Power.

Mistake two: 20 July

The CJP called a “Chalo Sansad” march to Parliament for 20 July, the opening day of the Monsoon Session, and urged the youth to show up. They showed up. The police had expected seven or eight thousand. By credible accounts, tens of thousands came — one widely reported estimate put it more than 1 lakh people. International outlets called it the largest demonstration against this government in years.

I was there. There was no aggression from the protesters when it began. What I saw, and what the videos show, is the police starting the lathi charge. What followed that day was brutal — Delhi Police and the Rapid Action Force beating students like criminals, more than a hundred people injured, dozens taken to hospital, several into intensive care. And it was not only excessive; independent legal analysis laid out how the force used broke well-established law drawn from the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) and binding Supreme Court judgments. Officers without name tags. Plain-clothed men wielding lathis. The rules on minimum necessary force simply ignored. Worse has since gone before the courts: senior advocates presented more than 130 videos alleging that women protesters were assaulted and molested — some by men in plain clothes — and demanded an independent probe. The Delhi High Court issued notice to the police, the Centre and the National Human Rights Commission and ordered that CCTV and video records be preserved. The court also noted that tear gas had been fired directly at protesters rather than away from them, against protocol, and that water cannons were not used first. Protesters say some of the shells fired at them were expired — a claim that should be settled by forensic examination, not left to rot.

The internet was cut around Jantar Mantar, which is how a lot of the footage only surfaced the next day. That shutdown drew condemnation, including internationally. And I want to name the people who made sure we saw it: independent journalists and creators like Newspinch, PeekTV, Samdish Bhatia, Sarthak Goswami, KK Creates, and so many more who stood in the tear gas and kept recording when it would have been easier to look away. That is what journalism is supposed to look like and it's a reminder of what the legacy media channels stopped doing a long time ago. The government’s friendly channels, meanwhile, went straight to calling the students terrorists. Delhi Police posted on X that it had handled the day professionally. We all saw the professionalism. Blatant Lies by Delhi Police.

After that day the protest changed one more time. It decentralised. It outgrew even the CJP leadership and became its own thing — an accountability movement against a government that had shown the country exactly how it treats its own children when they ask a question.

Mistake three: trying to starve it out

Then came the pettiest phase. The CJP accused Delhi Police of setting up checkpoints as far as five kilometres from Jantar Mantar to detain students heading to the site and to keep food and volunteers from reaching the protesters. “You cannot stop people from coming to Jantar Mantar. You cannot stop people from having food,” its spokesperson Ashutosh Ranka wrote. Accounts from the site described water being choked off and restaurants near Connaught Place and food-delivery apps pressured not to serve the area, all dressed up as “national security.” A government that commands more than twenty battalions of paramilitary forces (CRPF, ITBP, BSF, TSR, RAF, Delhi Police) felt threatened by teenagers with placards, and its answer was to try to stop them from eating. Against all that, one small act of decency stood out. While some establishments turned protesters away, Blue Tokai's Janpath outlet, just off Connaught Place, opened its doors — letting people shelter inside and refill their water bottles for free, in a clip that went viral. The chain's co-founder, Matt Chitharanjan, publicly backed his staff, writing that he was proud of them but wished "being decent to people wasn't so rare that it gets celebrated." He's right that it shouldn't be remarkable. That day, it was. Nothing strengthened the “democracy versus dictatorship” framing more than the sight of the state doing that.

Mistake four: the courts

The judiciary’s performance was, frankly, laughable. Urgent hearings on police brutality and on Wangchuk’s forced removal were not granted when it mattered. On 22 July the Supreme Court, under Chief Justice Surya Kant, refused to urgently hear a plea on police excesses, telling counsel not to waste the court’s time and saying the bench had no time to watch the videos. Sit with that. The entire movement began as satire about a judge calling the young cockroaches and here was the country’s highest court saying it could not spare the time to look at footage of those same young people being beaten. When there was later an attempt to walk the “cockroaches” remark back as reckless media reporting, it landed exactly as hollow as it deserved to.

Mistake five: turning the campuses on the students

Then the universities joined in. IIT Roorkee, Delhi University, IIT Madras, the AIU and others issued advisories warning students against joining the protests, citing Supreme Court directions and threatening disciplinary action even over social media posts. Read that plainly: the state’s answer to students protesting an education system that failed them was to weaponise that same education system to threaten them into silence. It did not work. It poured fuel on the fire. Protests spread across states. And the repression, multiplied and shared, only made people angrier.

On 24 July, after 26 days, Wangchuk ended his fast — not in triumph, but on a written assurance from the Centre on the NEET issue, with conditions that included withdrawing cases against peaceful protesters and compensating students harmed by the leak, and, in his own words, to head off further violence. Think about that. The man who had given his body to this movement settled for far less than the movement was demanding. That is not the posture of a mob. That is restraint.

What actually happened here

So when the BJP and its supporters now say Pradhan’s resignation proves this government takes accountability — NO. He did not resign out of accountability. This resignation was snatched from them. The people of India took back something that was theirs.

And there is unfinished business. Beyond Pradhan’s exit and the assurance of no FIRs against protesters, the movement should press for the identification of the officers who marched without name tags on 20 July and after, departmental inquiries into them, and FIRs against those who carried out the lathi charge and any who assaulted women. The videos exist and can be sent to forensic labs for authentication. There are witnesses. Some of that machinery is already moving — the High Court has sought answers from the police and the NHRC and ordered the footage preserved, and the CJP says it will publish a database to identify the officers who acted without name tags on 20 July. And there has already been at least a grudging admission: a senior officer described one colleague’s assault on a woman protester as him having “lost his cool.” Those responsible should answer for the constitutional and legal violations of that day, and they should apologise to the people they were meant to protect.

Most of all, we should not forget this. Not the movement, not the students who fasted, not the students who suicide over NEET, not the ones who bled on 20 July, and not what the state was willing to do to its own citizens to make them stop asking a simple question: WHO IS ACCOUNTABLE?

When the UPA left office, the Ministry of Education (then Human Resource Development) commanded roughly 4.6% of the Union Budget. Today that share sits at about 2.5%. The Department of School Education and Literacy has been cut roughly in half. Higher Education has slipped from around 1.6% to 1%. These are not rounding errors. These are policy choices.

Meanwhile the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has been treated like a favoured son. Its share of the budget has ballooned past 5.8% at its peak. The government that lectures the country on “Viksit Bharat” and “Amrit Kaal” has decided that asphalt is more important than classrooms. Highways get the money. Students get the leaks, the cancellations, the coaching mafias, and the occasional lecture about “exam integrity.”

And then there is the great skill-development revolution. Dharmendra Pradhan’s Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship was sold as the answer to everything education supposedly failed to deliver. Its allocation? During the 2016 election campaign, Prime Minister Narendra Modi publicly mocked Adhikari and other TMC figures over the scandal, declaring that the BJP would not tolerate corruption and would punish the guilty. A decade later, the same leader now cleared of certain procedural hurdles after joining the BJP heads the government the party once vowed to cleanse.

Bengalis have long prided themselves on their intellectual and cultural heritage, the “bhadralok” ethos of literature, debate, and progressive thought that produced icons like Rabindranath Tagore and Satyajit Ray. Yet voters have re-elected many of the same TMC faces who simply donned saffron robes, while the overall criminalisation of the legislature has only increased. The very MLAs who once represented TMC’s alleged misrule now sit in the ruling benches, making laws for the state.

Whether this represents genuine change or a mere rebranding remains a question for the people of Bengal. As one observer noted in the wake of the results, the promise to curb crime appears to have translated into more lawmakers with serious cases on their records. But his sharpest barbs target the Aravalli hills’ plunder, accusing “big billionaire companies” of eyeing the eco-barrier for mining, foretelling dust storms and water crises for the NCR. In a live roast, Goswami sneered at “the 15 crore anchor paid by the Government of India,” a thinly veiled jab at Sudhir Chaudhary, whose production house snagged a ₹15 crore (plus GST and escalations) annual gig with taxpayer-funded Prasar Bharati for a DD News slot. Is Arnab’s outrage genuine journalism reborn, or just sour grapes? After all, if Chaudhary’s getting the golden bone for staying muzzled, why not bark louder to renegotiate your own deal? Starting from a combined cash and bank balance of around ₹700 crore in 2014-15, the BJP’s liquid assets have cascaded to ₹7,114 crore by 2023-24, with total assets ballooning to ₹9,181 crore. Yet, the plot thickens with fresh revelations from the 2024 elections: The party’s funds have surged past ₹10,107 crore, a staggering 34-fold multiplication in a decade, powered by donations that hit ₹2,604 crore in 2023-24 alone, nine times Congress’s haul. The now-defunct electoral bonds scheme, scrapped by the Supreme Court in 2024, was the stealthy star of this show, funneling over ₹6,986 crore anonymously to the BJP, more than half of all bonds issued, while opposition parties scraped by on crumbs. This isn’t small-change charity; it’s a corporate convoy, with 99% of electoral trust donations veering straight to the saffron exchequer.

Cue the cronies: The Tata Group’s tale is a textbook tango of timing and tit-for-tat. Mere weeks after the Modi Cabinet approved ₹44,203 crore in subsidies for Tata’s semiconductor plants in Gujarat and Assam on February 29, 2024, public money plowed into private pocket, the conglomerate dispatched ₹758 crore to the BJP via trusts, the fattest pre-poll gift of the season. This isn’t isolated choreography; it’s a carousel of quid pro quos, where firms like Megha Engineering (₹584 crore donor) and Qwik Supply Chain (₹375 crore) waltz in with hefty handouts hot on the heels of government nods or contract windfalls. Over 40% of BJP’s bond backers were companies under probe, turning the scheme into a “laundry” for laundering influence, as critics quip. In the north-east, BJP’s donor roster reads like a who’s who of government contractors, underscoring how “development” dividends dance disproportionately to the tune of the ruling party’s tune.

Pity the principal opposition, the Indian National Congress (INC), whose fiscal fortunes flicker like a diya in a storm. From ₹702 crore in assets and ₹141 crore in donations in 2014-15, Congress clawed to ₹1,045 crore in total assets by 2023-24, with cash at a woeful ₹857 crore, a mere eighth of BJP’s bounty. Post-2024, the gap gapes wider: Congress’s funds languish at ₹133 crore, while the BJP’s tower at ₹10,160 crore. Election spends tell a similar sob story, the BJP torched ₹1,738 crore on its 2024 blitzkrieg (44% of all parties’ total), including ₹500 crore on media megaphones that beamed Modi’s mug into every bylane, versus Congress’s ₹620 crore (18.5%). It’s “ad-vikas” on steroids, but for a level field? More like a lopsided labyrinth.

The farce unfolded afresh in the December 2025 winter session of Parliament, where the Rajya Sabha’s debate on electoral reforms erupted into a no-holds-barred showdown. Congress MP and party treasurer Ajay Maken laid bare the “fat coffers” farce, brandishing data on BJP’s explosive growth from ₹88 crore post-2004 to ₹10,107 crore post-2024, while decrying the Election Commission’s (ECI) alleged favoritism. “The Election Commission will have to establish its reliability,” Maken thundered, likening it to “an umpire wearing one team’s jersey” that fixes matches in plain sight. He spotlighted the ECI’s stonewalling of Congress’s pleas over frozen accounts (₹210 crore IT dues yanked pre-polls) and selective enforcement, like blocking Congress’s farmer aid in Telangana but greenlighting NDA’s ₹10,000 women transfers in Bihar. On donations, Maken dropped a bombshell: Potential givers confide they can’t spare even 5% for Congress without inviting raids from the Enforcement Directorate (ED) or Income Tax sleuths, proof positive of how “Ache Din” shines selectively on saffron sympathizers. But let’s clear the air: the real culprits aren’t just stubble-burning farmers or Diwali crackers; it’s the breathtaking incompetence of successive governments that have turned the city into a toxic punchline.

Take the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), who ruled for a decade like they owned the place because they did. They implemented the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) with its levels 1 through 4, which sounded great on paper but did about as much to curb pollution as a paper mask in a dust storm. Sure, they slapped on some rules that nibbled at the edges of the problem, reducing pollution by a whisper, but after 10 years, Delhi’s air is still dirtier than a politician’s hands after a shady deal. They didn’t manipulate data like their successors, but their efforts were so half-baked, it’s a wonder the smog didn’t just laugh them off.

Enter the BJP government, whose approach to pollution control makes the AAP look like environmental Einsteins. Not content with raining failure, the CM now promises 10,000 electric heaters to RWAs to stop bonfires. Sounds warm and fuzzy, right? Wrong. There’s no public data on how many RWAs even exist in Delhi, and zero clarity on whether it’s one heater per RWA or per resident. Will a single heater warm an entire colony, or is this just another half-baked scheme? It’s heater-skelter stupidity, especially amid the farce of manipulated AQI stations, where data is tweaked like a bad Photoshop job to make the air seem cleaner than it is.

Protests erupt across Delhi and India, with citizens demanding breathable air, only to be treated like criminals by police wielding lathis and chili spray. It’s as if voicing concern for lungs is a crime against the state. Meanwhile, the Lieutenant Governor, in cahoots with BJP, floats the idea of hot air balloon services for “beautiful views” of Delhi because nothing says tourism like soaring through smog, inhaling premium pollution at altitude. Talk about hot air from a buffoon in power; this plan is ballooning idiocy at its finest.

In a shameless pivot, the BJP renames three metro stations, claiming it’s the “development” Delhi needs right now. Because when your city is suffocating, what better than wasting crores on signage swaps? It’s the only “achievement” BJP government boast these days: name-changing games that reek of desperation. And while insisting the air is fine, the Delhi Secretariat splurges on air purifiers, hypocrisy so thick, it needs its own filter.

The November 1 ban on non-BS6 vehicles from outside Delhi? A joke poorly implemented, causing chaos without denting pollution. Anti-smog trucks spray water like they’re auditioning for a bad comedy, most are broken, fans kaput while Lahore’s versions actually work. Even Pakistan’s doing better; Delhi’s “superiority” complex is lost in the fog.

Garbage incinerators at Ghazipur burn without filters, turning trash mountains into methane monsters, while factory chimneys spew unchecked. But hey, let’s prioritize metro renames because that’s what Delhiites crave amid coughing fits.

AAP at least didn’t fake data and made marginal gains; BJP lacks even that puff of effort. Now, the Supreme Court, in a pun-ishingly late epiphany, calls for an expert panel as if realizing after years that pollution needs pros, not polluti-cians. Govts listen to SC like kids to veggies: reluctantly, if at all.

If Delhi spent even 1-3% of its annual fiscal budget on pollution like Beijing did with coal curbs, industry shifts, and regional coordination, we’d breathe easier. But no, less than 0.5% is the norm, proving priorities are as polluted as the air. Beijing slashed pollution by 41% in a decade; Delhi’s just blowing smoke.

Delhi deserves better than this toxic tango of failure. Until the government stops the smog and mirrors and starts real action, we’ll keep choking on their incompetence.

In the grand bazaar of politics, nationalism isn’t just a sentiment - it’s a hot commodity, traded faster than chai at a roadside stall. Governments worldwide have long hawked this emotional elixir, but in India, the current BJP regime has turned it into a full-blown stock exchange frenzy. It was a masterclass in manipulation: dangle the carrot of “British benevolence” while wielding the stick of sectarian strife.
